Creativity and Emotional Wellness
Why do you feel better when you are creating?
Did you know that creativity is connected to mental wellness? How? Typically when you create, (whether it's crafting, painting, writing, wood working or computer programming), the activity requires intense concentration and focus. You may lose track of time while creating. You may find that original ideas and solutions form more spontaneously. This state of being is referred to by Psychologists as "flow", and is similar to what is achieved in meditation and other mindfulnessbased practices. Brain waves slow down and large amounts of endorphins, dopamine and serotonin are released. You feel good.
How can you use this bit of information to your advantage? Think back to the last time you felt like you lost all sense of time. It may have been an afternoon when you got so lost in an activity that three hours felt like five minutes. You may have been so engaged in the activity that you didn't want to stop for dinner. When you did stop, you wanted to tell someone about what you were doing. Where were you when that happened? What were you doing?
If nothing comes to mind, think back to your childhood for clues. Were you a kid who enjoyed art, writing, or building a fort? You might also conduct your own experiment now. Take a field trip to a local art store or go through a box of crafting supplies that may be sitting in your closet. Notice how you feel when you look at your tools. Does anything call to you? How does it feel to hold a ball of yarn in your hand, pick up a paint brush, or write in your journal. Allow yourself permission to experience, engage and create whatever your mind is leading you towards. Trust that within everyone is an inner artist waiting for expression, and ready to guide you towards health and healing.
